The Gibbs Rogers carvings
St Mary-at-Hill was modernised in 1848 with the woodwork and furniture also being upgraded to Victorian tastes. New carvings included work by William Gibbs Rogers (1792-1895), one of Victorian Britain’s best-known woodcarvers, with the examples in this church representing some of his finest work. As well as his carvings in this church, Gibbs Rogers was also commissioned to work at Chatsworth House, in addition to producing stunning pieces for the royal family at Kensington Palace and Brighton Pavilion.
